2019 Saffron Fields
The stunningly beautiful Saffron Fields lies on the Eastern edge of Yamhill Carlton, nestled above Shea Vineyard to the south. The vineyard was planted in 2007 on a promontory 400 feet above sea level by Dr. Angela Summers and Sanjeev Lahoti with high-density Pinot Noir vines that have been sustainably farmed since. Our blocks at Saffron utilize Pommard, a sought-after and early-ripening clone known for its intense inky spice and meaty character. The combination of lower elevation and orientation that maximizes mid-day sun makes Saffron Fields our warmest and earliest-ripening site. Pairing the early-blooming and powerful Pommard with Saffron’s substantial heat makes for a wine with blockbuster potential.
The 2019 Saffron Fields displays the structural elements of the site, a massive and dense wine that still manages a supple mouthfeel. For all of the intensity, this isn’t just about the power. Intriguing aromas of black cherries and raspberries, plum compote, and nutmeg emerge immediately, supported by a distinct saline/rocky core. The tannins, while present, are ripe and fine, supporting a minutes-long finish that is broad and expressive. Decant this now to reveal the magic or let it grow in the cellar.

Plums and dried fruit with some cinnamon undertones, following through to a full body with fine, creamy tannins and a juicy finish. Nice and attractive ripe fruit in the center-palate. Drinkable now, but better in a year or two.
